Why explaining less can actually help more
As dementia progresses, the brain has to work incredibly hard just to process spoken language. Every word, tone of voice, and shift in energy requires effort to interpret. Too much verbal input can quickly overwhelm the brain’s ability to make sense of what’s happening. When this happens, confusion and distress often increase, not because the person isn’t listening, but because their brain is overloaded. Using fewer words, along with clear body language, gentle gestures, and a supportive environment, allows information to be conveyed in a way that feels safer and easier to understand. Sometimes presence, tone, and visual cues communicate far more effectively than explanations ever could.
